About:

The Purna River is an important tributary of the Tapti River in the western part of India. Flowing mainly through the state of Maharashtra, the river plays a vital role in supporting agriculture in the region. The word Purna means Complete and also simultaneously known as `Sampurna`. Purna River has several tributaries, namely the Aarna River, Uma River, Pendhi River, Katepurna River, Shahanur River, Bhavkhuri River, Bhuleswari River, Chandrabhaga River, Morna River, Mas River, Mann River, Gandhari River, Vishwamitri River, Utawali River, Nirguna River, Aas River and Vaan River.

Location info:

The Purna River originates from the Satpura Range in Madhya Pradesh, near the town of Bhainsdehi. It flows through the districts of Amravati, Akola, and Buldhana in Maharashtra, eventually merging with the Tapti River. The river covers a distance of around 334 km, enriching the agricultural lands along its course.

Climate/Weather:

The region around the Purna River experiences a tropical climate: Summers (March to June): Hot, with temperatures rising above 40°C. Monsoons (June to September): Heavy rainfall, which significantly raises the river’s water level. Winters (November to February): Cool and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C, making it the best time to visit.

History:

Historically, the Purna River has supported agricultural activities for centuries. Several ancient settlements developed around the river due to the fertile plains it creates. It has been an essential part of irrigation projects in the region, especially post-independence, with the construction of dams and irrigation systems.

You can go for boating and picnics at Chhatri Talao, which is a reservoir on the outskirts of Amravati. Wadali Talao, which has a zoo and also boating facilities, is another popular weekend place.

Situating in the heart of Amravati city, it is believed that Shri Krishna abducted Rukmini, from this temple, and married her. Goddess Amba attracts devotees from different parts of Vidarbha.

Situating in the heart of the city at Rallies Plot, the temple has beautiful idols of Lord Krishna and Radha, Lord Ram and Sita, Lord Ganesh, Lord Shiva and Rani Satiji. A fair is organized on the occasion of Janmashthami every year. Huge devotees attend the fair.
